Chevy engineers did a great job using the same parts on many different engine combinations. The 366, 396, 402, 427, and 427 tall deck engines all used the 3.76-inch stroke crankshaft. The 454 and 502 use the 4.00-inch stroke crankshaft. The 496 Gen VII and the 572 Gen VI use a 4.375-inch stroke crankshaft.

The 366 was a good rental truck engine, but if you had to have a gasser, the 427 was a much better choice. They started using the 'Vortec' 454 instead of the old 366 and 427 starting in 1998 or so, and those pump out about 270 h.p. in medium duty trim, which ain't bad for a gasser. The oil pump ends are different between the factory points distributor and this new HEI replacement distributor.
