I beat Elvarg recently with my F2P HCIM at 50 attack and 30 defence with rune mace and full mith. Assuming Elvarg has no hidden weakness, I suspect melee is easier simply because Elvarg uses her dragonfire less often when you are in melee range. Dragonfire does a lot more damage than her melee attacks, and it drains prayer.
