As for the Smelter Wedges, I largely assume them to be simple game mechanics, but their name is rather curious. It may well be that they have some relation to the Smelter Demon, but it's difficult to say for sure. It's just as likely that they are simply wedges made of smelted iron, making them hard enough to pierce the Ashen Idols of Nadalia.
Yes Lud and Zallen drop the same thing, but if you're struggling with the fight, I've added pillars so you can at least divide the two bosses. They are indestructible which makes the fight a little more trivial, still a big struggle but manageable. Greatlance is right after the king's door in fofg.
