During my visit to Henry Cowell Redwood State Park, I basically stumbled on the Roaring Camp Railroad that is right on the other side of the parking lot.After walking around the beautiful Redwood Grove Trail, I went over to check out the train and got a ticket for the ride that was leaving 15 minutes later. One train goes up the mountain and another goes from Roaring Camp into town and the Boardwalk (in season). The two venues are near each other, but not the same place. You could do both, but if it is Henry Cowell you want to see, and which I recommend, then you don't want the train. Stop at the visitor center for information on trails.
